Abstract:

Join us for this webcast as we address best practices for integrating green infrastructure into stormwater designs and Post-Construction BMP strategies.  Bill Wood, PE, and John Helfrich, PE, ENV, SP, Associate Civil Engineers for SmithGroupJJR, will present a case study on green infrastructure at Loyola University Chicago’s Lake Shore Campus: Restoring Hydrology through Campus Redevelopment.  Chad W. Brensinger, PE, LEED SP, Project Manager at Charles E. Shoemaker, Inc., will present a case study on an automobile dealership development in Willow Grove, PA.  The presentation will cover stormwater best management practices used at the dealership to provide several levels of water quality and flow reduction to minimize local stormwater runoff issues, localized flooding and stream bank erosion.   Loyola University Chicago - Project Description: In the early 2000s, Loyola University Chicago embarked on their REIMAGINE Campaign, an ambitious capital im¬provements plan to create a more attractive, cohesive campus that engages students, welcomes the neighboring community, and reflects the institution’s strong environmental ethic. To further realize the campus’s ecological and community potential, Loyola developed a Stormwater Management Master Plan featuring a holistic approach to green infrastructure and stormwater strategies.   Completed in 2016, the multi-phased development implemented new varsity and intramural athletic facilities, a new student center and dining facility, a new academic building, signature quad spaces, and campus-wide infrastructure over an 8-year period.  Underground stormwater storage and infiltration vaults became integral components of the implementation plan and contribute to diverting over 6 million gallons of rainwater annually from Chicago’s aging combined sewer system.   Thompson Lexus Willow Grove, Pennsylvania - Project Description: Thompson Lexus Willow Grove redeveloped their 9.9-acre site at 2560 Maryland Road in Upper Moreland Township for a new Lexus automobile dealership. The project constructed an integrated stormwater management system that involves rain gardens, underground detention, and infiltration structures around the buildings and under the large 513-car parking lot of this new dealership.   Due to the site’s proximity to the Pennypack Creek, the design of the stormwater management systems on this site were critical for the success of the life cycle of the project, as well as for the health of the Pennypack Creek channel and downstream aquatic ecosystem.

Speakers

Bill Wood, PE

Associate, Civil Engineer SmithGroupJJR Bill Wood, Senior Civil Engineer, has developed his expertise in site and infrastructure design by leading projects at SmithGroupJJR in a multitude of markets. His ability to integrate infrastructure with distinctive, placemaking design enables him to create a project vision and bring it to life, further enriching the user experience. Bill conceptualized the Stormwater Management Master Plan for Loyola University Chicago’s Lake Shore Campus, and served as the Lead Civil Engineer to implement the plan through multiple phases of construction from 2008 to 2016. Bill holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Michigan.

John Helfrich, PE, ENV SP

Associate, Civil Engineer SmithGroupJJR John Helfrich, Civil Engineer at SmithGroupJJR, has extensive experience in implementing sustainable and creative stormwater management systems across the Chicagoland area. He works integrally with multidisciplinary design and owner team members on a wide range of project types to provide innovative and holistic infrastructure solutions. John has served as Project Engineer on several projects to implement the Stormwater Management Master Plan for Loyola University Chicago along with numerous developments for other university and healthcare clients in the Midwest. John earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Chad W. Brensinger, PE, LEED® AP

Project Manager Charles E. Shoemaker, Inc. Mr. Brensinger is a graduate of Lehigh University with a focus in hydrology. Chad has been with Charles E. Shoemaker since graduating in 2002 and obtained his Pennsylvania Professional Engineer’s License in 2007 and his NJ and DE licenses in 2016. He has also successfully completed his LEED Professional Accreditation though the U.S. Green Building Certification Institute in June of 2009. His experience includes all aspects site civil engineering including layout, grading, storm sewer, erosion control and sanitary sewer design. However, Chad specializes in stormwater management and erosion control design and has attended various seminars and training sessions to stay current with today’s demanding stormwater management design and permitting requirements where water quality, rates, volumes and environmental sustainability are critical. Much is his experience pertains to managing stormwater runoff on challenging sites where space is very limited and designing an efficient, cost effective and environmentally conscious stormwater management system is paramount in the life of the project.
